When you get caught committing a sex act with your best friend's wife while wearing your uniform do you (a) get fired (b) get written up and fired (c) get fired and beat for wrecking a marriage or two or (d) allowed to take administrative leave until your birthday so you can retire ? If you picked D you might win a prize.
This is the third time in a couple of months that an valued employee with the New Hanover County Sheriff has been caught in either criminal behavior of damn near criminal behavior and been allowed to resign rather than fired.
Doesn't it make sense to fire someone for assault, fire someone for conduct unbecoming or fire someone for being caught with their pants down in a compromising position?
thats the funniest damn thing ive ever heard. poor guy though.
oh well id have fired his ass the second he walked in the door.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I have heard yet. Or it was at least! That was until I also heard the Sheriff allowed two more deputies to RESIGN after one was charged with DWI and wreckless endangerment. The other was charged, in an unrelated incident, with aiding and abetting a DWI. The NHCSO is sinking quickly and it would appear that the Sheriff doesn't even want to try and bail it out any.
START FIRING SOME OF THESE PEOPLE! Send a message that this behavior won't be tolerated or it WILL continue. He is obviously way too nice a guy to do what is necessary to enforce some discipline. It doesn't mean that you have to crack heads but, dammit, fire some of the ones that DESERVE to be fired.
Caught in a sex act with a married person while on duty? FIRED. Threaten to assault a volunteer fireman while representing the Sheriff's Office? FIRE HIM! Use your position to perform ILLEGAL favors for friends? FIRED! Get arrested for a DWI while transporting a 3 yr. old and a 5 yr. old? FIRED!!! Aid and abet a DWI? FIRED, FIRED, FIRED!!!
Allowing these deputies to keep resigning or retiring or assisting them with finding new jobs in the county government is ludicrous. It ensures that they have the ability to go to another jurisdiction and become someone else's problem. That is hardly an exampole of strong ethics, morals, or leadership.
This ship needs righting...and right away!

Personally can't wait til he is elected as our Sheriff. It will happen, just wait and see.

Keith Ward at the Columbus County Sheriff's Office has wrecked a few homes and gotten caught with his pants down quite a few times. Still Chris Batten persists in keeping him.
