Amy Carolina Frink, was 18 when, on June 23, 1994, she was tortured, raped, stabbed and eviscerated in Brunswick County. Her killers left her to bleed to death across the state line in South Carolina, authorities said.
The other man convicted for being an accessory to Frink's murder was set free in 2008. John Paul Counts, 42, was released early from prison for good behavior because he was eligible for the state's Mutual Agreement Parole Program. The program applies to offenders who committed their crimes before Oct. 1, 1994, and were sentenced under the state's Fair Sentencing law.
John Gamble, 46, will be released in less than two weeks after serving since July 17, 2000, on convictions of first-degree murder, rape, kidnapping and accessory-after-the-fact. He was sentenced to a total of 30 years. He has 23 violations on his prison record, including a weapons charge in 2007.
